A Survey of Sustainable Development : Social and Economic Dimensions

This final volume in the "Frontier Issues in Economic Thought" series by the Global Development and Environment Institute at Tufts University summarizes 66 articles on current issues in sustainable social and economic development. The articles are drawn from a range of disciplines, collecting views of economists with those of other social, political, and natural scientists in an effort to provide an alternative approach to traditional economic development. The articles are arranged in ten parts, each of which is accompanied by an overview essay providing pertinent background information on the articles and putting them within the context of literature on the topic. Parts 1, 2, and 3 present general perspectives of sustainability: environmental and social perspectives and Southern criticism of Northern-dominated programs. Parts 4, 5, and 6 offer analyses of specific aspects of sustainability: population growth, agriculture and renewable resources, and industrial systems and energy use. Parts 7 through 10 focus on policy issues: globalization, the role of corporations, national and local government policies, and global institutional reform. The articles represent the issues well, and the overview essays are useful by themselves to acquaint readers with the literature. Recommended for upper-division undergraduate through professional collections. M. Morgan-Davie Utica College of Syracuse University
